Turkey have played in the FIFA World Cup thrice, in 1954, 2002 and 2026. In 1954, they did not progress past the group stage, finishing in ninth position. In 2002, Turkey finished third. They were defeated 1–0 to eventual tournament winners Brazil in the semi-final, then in the bronze medal match defeated co-hosts South Korea 3–2.

Turkey lost 2-7 to Germany in the playoff of the 1954 FIFA World Cup.

2002

Turkey reached the semi final of the 2002 FIFA World Cup, but lost 0-1 to Brazil. The team finished third in the competition after winning the third place match against South Korea.

2026

Turkey have qualified for the 2026 World Cup and will play against the USA, Paraguay, and Australia in Group D.

Trivia

  • The first country to be progress by the toss of coin in the qualifying round was Turkey, which beat Spain on toss after a 2:2 tie in a play-off match on 17 March 1954.
